David Abzug; Interactive Media Dept, Bradley University

Technology is vital to games but true innovation in games is usually found in terms of gameplay and user experience. The game industry has always followed along a similar path to the movie industry, albeit at an accelerated rate. We’re currently firmly in the blockbuster era, with most companies fitting into one of two categories. On the one side you have the major studios, putting out blockbusters showcasing awesome technical prowess and polished storytelling skills. Games like Spider-Man, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Doom Eternal spring to mind.

But on the other side, you have independent studios developing new ideas with games like Antichamber, Celeste, Hollow Knight and the like. the advantage of these smaller studios is they can cater to a more specific target audience and still make money. If you spend half a billion dollars on a game then it had better have mass appeal. Over the next few years I expect we will see different things from different corners of the game industry.
