60 Best Interactive Story Games in 2024

by Andrea Knezovic

If you’re into story games that are more about the journey and the story than fast-paced action, check out this list. I’ve curated the best interactive story games where your choices impact story outcomes.

heavy rain story game

Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain is a game developed by Quantic Dream that really stands out because of its unique narrative and immersive gameplay. It’s a cinematic thriller, where your decisions shape the story’s path and outcome.

In Heavy Rain, you play as multiple characters, each with their own perspective and involvement in the mystery of the Origami Killer, a criminal who uses extended periods of rainfall to drown his victims. What’s cool about playing as different characters is that you get to see the story from several angles, and your actions with one character can affect the others in significant ways.

The gameplay focuses on making choices, performing interactive actions, and solving puzzles. These elements are integrated into a tense and emotional narrative. Every decision counts, leading to multiple possible endings based on what you decide.

This makes the game highly replayable, as you might be curious to see how different choices lead to different outcomes.

life is strange

Life Is Strange

Life Is Strange is one of the OG interactive story games, released back in 2015 on PC and PlayStation. Fans were beyond excited when Life Is Strange was released on mobile in 2018, followed by a remastered version in 2021.

This outstanding adventure game has been praised for its gripping story, relatable characters, and emotional impact.

What’s more, it revolutionized narrative adventure games by allowing players to go back in time and affect the past, present, and future. That creates different outcomes and multiple possible endings, which makes the gameplay incredibly engaging and complex.

Life Is Strange follows the story of a teenage girl Max Caulfield, who discovers that she can rewind time. She uses this special power to try to solve the mystery behind the disappearance of a fellow student, Rachel Amber. At the same time, she’s trying to navigate common challenges of high school life like trying to fit in, feeling like an outcast, and bullying.

This is what makes Life Is Strange so memorable – most of us can relate to these themes.

As the game progresses, your choices and actions have significant consequences. Not only do they affect Max’s life but also the lives of those around her.

wolf among us

Wolf Among Us

The Wolf Among Us is definitely a cool pick if you’re into interactive story games. It’s developed by Telltale Games, which is known for creating games where your choices really shape the story.

The game is set in a gritty, noir-inspired world where characters from fairy tales and folklore—think Big Bad Wolf, Snow White, etc.—are real and living in secret in our world.

The twist?

They’re disguised as humans through magic to blend into society. The game calls these characters “Fables,” and they live in a hidden community in New York City called Fabletown.

You play as Bigby Wolf, who is the sheriff of Fabletown. Bigby, formerly the infamous Big Bad Wolf, now reformed, is tasked with keeping order in this tense community. Your decisions influence the storyline, and impact relationships and events as you solve crimes and uncover deeper conspiracies.

The art style is striking, resembling a living comic book, which fits perfectly with its dark, mysterious vibe.

Tell Me Why interactive story games

Tell Me Why

Tell Me Why is another engaging story game you might really enjoy.

Developed by DONTNOD Entertainment, the same studio behind the popular Life is Strange series, this game goes into the emotional and complex story of twins Tyler and Alyson Ronan as they return to their small Alaskan hometown to uncover the truth about their troubled past.

What makes this game stand out is its profound narrative approach and the twins’ unique ability to experience and recall their past memories differently.

Your choices will influence which memories you believe and how the twins’ relationship evolves, which in turn shapes the unfolding story. The game is split into three episodic chapters, which makes the storytelling more impactful and gives you time to reflect on the decisions you make.

Additionally, Tell Me Why is notable for its inclusive representation, featuring Tyler as one of the first playable transgender characters from a major studio.

The game has been developed with a strong commitment to authentic representation, including consulting with LGBTQ advocacy groups.

ace attorney game screenshot

Ace Attorney

Ace Attorney is a series of visual novel adventure games where you step into the shoes of a defense attorney. The most famous character you play as is Phoenix Wright, a passionate lawyer known for his ability to turn seemingly hopeless cases around.

The gameplay mainly revolves around two phases: investigations and courtroom trials.

During the investigation phase, you gather evidence, talk to witnesses, and prepare for trial. Then, in court, you present your findings, cross-examine witnesses, and try to uncover contradictions in testimonies to prove your client’s innocence.

What’s fun about it is how dramatic and over-the-top the courtroom battles can be. The characters are super quirky and the cases often have unexpected twists.

Dreamfall Chapters story games

Dreamfall Chapters

Dreamfall Chapters is a continuation of the adventure game saga that began with The Longest Journey and continued in Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

It’s a story-driven game that combines elements of fantasy and science fiction, exploring two parallel worlds—Stark, a futuristic version of Earth, and Arcadia, a magical realm.

The game is praised for its deep narrative and complex characters. It picks up where Dreamfall: The Longest Journey left off, following the stories of Zoë Castillo, who is trying to uncover the mysteries of her coma and the Dream Machine, and Kian Alvane, a former assassin seeking redemption.

The choices you make significantly impact the story, leading to different outcomes and adding to the replay value.

Fans and critics appreciate Dreamfall Chapters for its emotional storytelling and the immersive environments. The voice acting and the soundtrack are also standout features.

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical story games

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical

Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is definitely one of those unique gaming experiences that caught my eye because it’s not often you see “roleplaying” and “musical” in the same sentence when it comes to video games!

Here’s the scoop.

Stray Gods is an interactive narrative game that combines role-playing elements with musical storytelling.

It’s like being in a musical theater production where you’re also making key decisions that affect the storyline.

You play as Grace, who suddenly inherits the mantle of the Muse of Tragedy. With this new power, you discover a hidden world where gods and myths are real, and they’re living incognito in our modern world.

The game is packed with songs that actually integrate into the gameplay and narrative.

Depending on the choices you make, different musical scenes play out, which is pretty cool because it makes your gameplay experience feel very personal and dynamic.

interactive story game Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human is a super engaging and interactive story game developed by Quantic Dream.

The game is set in a futuristic version of Detroit where androids who look just like humans are integrated into society to serve various roles, like caretakers or workers.

The story revolves around three android characters—Kara, Connor, and Markus.

Each of them has a different background and a unique perspective on their place in society. Kara is a caretaker android who escapes her owner to protect a young girl, thrusting her into a conflict between androids and humans.

Connor is a police investigator android whose job is to hunt down deviant androids that have broken their programming. Lastly, Markus finds himself becoming the leader of the android rebellion.

Every decision you make impacts the outcomes, leading to multiple endings based on what you decide. It really makes you think about themes like humanity, freedom, and morality.

oxenfree game screenshot

Oxenfree

Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller adventure game that blends eerie storytelling with a distinctive radio mechanic.

You play as Alex, a teenager who brings her stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on an old military island. Things take a spooky turn when the group of friends accidentally opens a ghostly rift using an old radio. The story unfolds through player-driven dialogue choices that affect the relationships between characters and the plot direction.

The game is known for its natural-sounding conversations, which is a big part of its charm. You get to choose Alexs responses during dialogues, which can change how other characters view her and alter the storys outcome.

The atmosphere is tense and mysterious, supported by impressive visuals and a captivating soundtrack. Its an excellent pick if you enjoy games that mix deep narrative elements with paranormal mysteries, all set on a remote and moody island.

Beyond Two Souls elliot page

Beyond Two Souls

Beyond: Two Souls is a unique interactive drama and action-adventure game, also developed by Quantic Dream, the same folks who made Detroit: Become Human.

The game stars Jodie Holmes, voiced and motion-captured by actor Elliot Page. From a young age, Jodie has been linked to a mysterious supernatural entity named Aiden, who has incredible powers.

The game spans several years of Jodie’s life, detailing her struggles to understand what Aiden is and how their bond affects her life.

The story explores themes of acceptance, personal identity, and the line between life and death.

You control both Jodie and Aiden throughout the game, using Aiden to interact with the world in ways Jodie cannot. This includes manipulating objects, creating protective shields, and even possessing other characters temporarily.

The narrative is nonlinear, jumping back and forth in time to piece together the significant events of Jodie’s life.

Telltale’s Walking Dead interactive story game

Telltale’s Walking Dead

Telltale’s The Walking Dead series is another fantastic choice if you’re into interactive story games! It’s a point-and-click adventure that’s based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series and has a strong focus on character development and player choice.

The game revolves around Lee Everett, a convicted criminal who finds himself in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Early on, he meets a young girl named Clementine, and the game largely focuses on their developing relationship as Lee takes on the role of Clementine’s protector.

The decisions you make throughout the game significantly affect how the story unfolds, impacting relationships with other characters and the survival tactics you choose.

What makes The Walking Dead series stand out is its deep emotional storytelling and the heavy consequences of your choices. The narrative is gripping, filled with tense moments, moral dilemmas, and heartbreaking decisions. The characters are well-developed and memorable, making players genuinely care about their fates.

Each season builds on the last, with Clementine’s journey continuing as she grows older and faces new challenges in a world overrun by walkers.

Mask of the Rose game screenshot

Mask of the Rose

Mask of the Rose is a great choice if you enjoy games that blend narrative depth with a unique setting and mechanics.

It’s is set in the same universe as Fallen London and Sunless Sea, known as the Fallen London Universe.

It is a romantic visual novel that occurs in an alternate version of Victorian London which has been stolen by bats and now lies beneath the surface of the Earth. The game explores themes of love, secrets, and the supernatural.

What makes Mask of the Rose stand out is its rich, gothic narrative style combined with a focus on relationships and societal norms of its unique setting.

Unlike many other visual novels that prioritize romance primarily, this game also deeply engages with its world-building, offering a mysterious and atmospherically rich backdrop. You will investigate crimes, uncover mysteries, and interact with a cast of characters each with their own hidden depths and stories.

Neo Cab story game

Neo Cab

Neo Cab is a really interesting game where you step into the shoes of Lina, the last human taxi driver in a city dominated by automation.

As you navigate through the neon-lit streets of a futuristic city, your main job is to drive around passengers. But there’s more to it than just driving; each passenger brings their own story, and you’ll find yourself wrapped up in conversations that can get pretty deep and personal.

The cool part about Neo Cab is that it’s not just about the driving—you have to manage Lina’s emotional wellbeing too. The choices you make in your conversations affect Lina’s mood and, ultimately, the story itself. So, every decision counts, making your journey through the game unique and immersive.

The game beautifully mixes elements of mystery and emotional storytelling, as Lina tries to solve the mystery of her missing friend, all while managing her interactions with the passengers and coping with the challenges of her life.

The Devil in Me interactive story game

The Devil in Me

The Devil in Me is part of the Dark Pictures Anthology, a series of standalone, cinematic horror games. This particular installment is known as the season finale for the first season of the anthology.

This game is about a chilling story inspired by the real-life horrors of H.H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer.

Set in a creepy, meticulously constructed murder castle, The Devil in Me features a group of documentary filmmakers who are invited to a replica of Holmes’ hotel.

The offer seems like the perfect opportunity to boost their struggling TV show with a sensational season finale.

However, the excitement quickly turns into a nightmare as they discover the hotel’s deadly mechanisms and traps, realizing that they’re being watched and manipulated.

Disco Elysium narrative game

Disco Elysium

You should also give Disco Elysium a try, especially if you love story-rich games! It’s an exceptional RPG that’s quite different from your typical role-playing game.

Instead of combat, the game focuses on dialogue and character development, set in a richly detailed world. You play as a detective with a unique skill system at your disposal and a whole city block to carve your path across.

The writing in Disco Elysium is top-notch—smart, sometimes darkly funny, and deeply engaging. You get to solve a murder mystery, but how you go about it is entirely up to you. Do you want to play it smooth, use brute force, become a moral beacon, or maybe dive deep into existential thoughts?

Your skills and the way you choose to develop them will open up different paths and dialogue options in the game.

Plus, the art style is visually stunning, with a kind of gritty charm that perfectly complements the game’s atmosphere.

Citizen Sleeper game screenshot

Citizen Sleeper

Citizen Sleeper is another fantastic choice if you’re into interactive story games. It’s set in a richly developed sci-fi universe, where you play as a Sleeper—a human consciousness uploaded into a synthetic body.

The game takes place on a lawless space station called Erlin’s Eye, which is bustling with various factions, characters, and stories.

The gameplay revolves around survival, decision-making, and building relationships with other station residents. Each in-game day, you’ll make choices on how to spend your limited time and energy: whether to work a job, help a friend, explore the station, or dive into the station’s politics and mysteries. These choices not only influence your survival but also the outcome of events around the station.

The game brilliantly blends elements of tabletop RPG mechanics with narrative storytelling. The dice-roll system influences outcomes, adding a layer of unpredictability and excitement to your actions.

What’s particularly engaging about Citizen Sleeper is its exploration of themes like identity, autonomy, and the struggle against oppressive systems.

gone home game screenshot

Gone Home

Gone Home is like a video game version of snooping through someone else’s house, trying to figure out what happened to them.

You play as Katie, who comes back home after a year away and finds that no one’s there to greet her. The whole game is about exploring this big, old house during a stormy night, digging through drawers, reading notes, and piecing together the story of her family, especially her sister Sam.

What’s awesome about it is that there’s no pressure. No puzzles that make you want to pull your hair out, no monsters jumping out—just you walking around, uncovering secrets. It feels super real because it’s all about normal life stuff, like family problems and figuring out who you are.

It’s like being in a drama movie where you get to control the pace and focus on the details that interest you the most.

Plus, it’s not just wandering around. The house feels alive with all its hidden stories and details, which makes it genuinely intriguing.

Best Interactive Story Games on Mobile

If like playing interactive story games on mobile, you know how difficult it is to find them.

On the app stores, you’ll usually find them in simulation or adventure games categories. But there are so many to choose from – which one should you play?

In this section, we’ll take a look at some of the best interactive story games currently available on mobile. I highlight their unique features, captivating storylines, and immersive gameplay. I guarantee these interactive fiction games will keep you hooked just like their PC and console counterparts.

Without further ado, here’s my curated list of the best interactive story apps.

unwritten how will your story end

1. Unwritten: How Will Your Story End?

Unwritten: How Will Your Story End is an outstanding choice for anyone looking for interactive story games that are both entertaining and intriguing.

Here’s why I believe it’s the best interactive story game on mobile right now.

This newly released interactive story game features multiple series with hybrid gameplay and interactive elements that will keep you entertained for hours on end.

Through its beautiful art, unique personalities, and compelling storytelling, Unwritten brings something fresh and new to the world of visual novels.

What sets Unwritten apart from other interactive fiction games is that it’s incredibly diverse, both in terms of its characters and genres. While romance plays a role in the game, it’s intertwined with playable scenarios and objectives, making it entirely optional.

What’s more, Unwritten: How Will Your Story End has meaningful choices that truly make a difference, which unfortunately can’t be said for many other choice-based games. The choices you make in the game influence not only the direction the story takes but also how it ends.

Because of that, Unwritten quickly became my all-time favorite interactive game.

Another thing I love about Unwritten is its community. Even though this narrative game is still very new, it already has a dedicated fanbase that has been around from the very beginning. The game’s developers (Milkshake Games) are also very active on Unwritten Discord and welcome fan input, which is nice.

Lastly, Unwritten: How Will Your Story End is available for free download on both Google Play and Apple’s App Store, so there’s no reason not to check it out!

  2. Triple Scoop – A high school comedy-drama that follows an aspiring journalist writing a raunchy exposé of the three most popular students in Rubrik High. A heart-throb star quarterback with a passion for theater, an academia-oriented girl obsessed with fantasy role-playing games, and a punk-rock rebel fighting to save the environment.
  3. Business with Pleasure – A steamy storyline set in an adult nightclub. You take on the role of a young exotic dancer trying to handle a turbulent work environment and eccentric personalities.
  4. Gears of Snow and Cinders – A fantasy forbidden love story where you experience what it’s like to be a tortured princess who takes her life into her own hands and fulfills her destiny.

chapters story game

2. Chapters: Interactive Stories

Chapters: Interactive Stories is one of the most entertaining choose-your-own-story adventure games.

The main thing I like about it is that it has a good reading experience and new stories are published fairly often. There’s a wide variety of story genres to choose from, like romance, comedy, drama, fantasy, and more.

Whatever you’re into, you’ll probably find a story you like.

For example, if interactive erotica is your jam and you’re into D/s relationships, you’ll probably enjoy To Have and to Master, a spicy arranged marriage story. There’s something for everybody!

In this interactive story game, your choices make a difference and affect the storyline. However, unlike in Unwritten, where choices can significantly influence a story and even its ending, different choices in Chapters only lead to minor plot changes.

This story-based game has mostly positive reviews. However, there are some negative ones as well, mainly regarding paid features and lacking free choice options.

tears of themis game

5. Tears of Themis

Tears of Themis is a detective adventure game published by miHoYo, creators of Genshin Impact., a mega-popular role-playing game.

This game is a bit different from other interactive fiction games on this list – it’s more of a murder mystery adventure game with card game elements. You play as a young lawyer who has to solve complicated legal cases while also managing relationships with fascinating characters.

However, it also features one main interactive story that’s very immersive, which is why I included it on this list of best story games.

What I like about Tears of Themis is that it flawlessly combines romance and mystery genres to deliver a thrilling gaming experience.

In the game, you have to search for clues at crime scenes, analyze them, and solve challenging puzzles and mysteries. As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock new stories, characters, and hidden secrets, so you’ll never get bored.

What makes Tears of Themis so special is its focus on storytelling and character development. The characters are all unique, meticulously designed, and have their own personalities, backgrounds, and motivations. You’ll have to build relationships with them and navigate the complexities of their lives to solve the game’s mysteries.

On top of all that, the game’s anime-inspired visual style is impeccable – it’s my favorite thing about this story-based choice game. The game’s animations are also super smooth, which makes playing it all the more enjoyable.

Tears of Themis is free-to-play, and you get daily login bonuses and events, which is pretty cool. And, you can connect with other players and enjoy the social aspect of the game too.

The game has gained popularity among female gamers because of its great storytelling and unique characters, as well as its unique blend of gameplay mechanics.

The game’s narrative structure is set up so that every decision you make has consequences. Meanwhile, the simulation game elements make the character interactions feel real and tangible.

And of course, the ability to customize your character’s appearance through the dress-up feature allows you to become whoever you want. This is my favorite feature because it adds an extra layer of personalization to the gaming experience.

All in all, MeChat is a must-play for anyone who loves interactive fiction games with immersive storytelling and well-rounded characters.
